Freddie Mercury: Freddie Mercury
05. 09. 2011. Sometimes we invite guests to post about items of interest and are excited to have Brian May join us to talk about his friend and bandmate Freddie Mercury. Our graffiti celebrating Freddie’s birthday can be seen around the world on September 5th and in the United States on September 6th.Guitarist and songwriter Brian May was a founding member of the Queen and wrote many of the band’s hits including “We Will Rock You,” “The Show Must Go On,” and “I Want It All.” Brian is also a respected solo artist and one of the founders of Freddie for a Day (www.freddieforaday.com ), an organization that helps fight HIV/AIDS around the world. For the first time, I was introduced to Freddie Mercury, a paradoxically shy but flashy young man, by the side of the stage in one of his early activities as a group “Smile.” He told me he was excited about the way we played, he had some ideas – and he could sing! I don’t know if we took him seriously, but he had an atmosphere of someone who knew he was right. He was a weak but energetic Dundee with seemingly impossible dreams and evil eyes. After a while, I had a chance to actually see him sing… I was scared! He was wild and uneducated, but very charismatic. Soon he began to evolve into a global talent for vocal music before our eyes.Freddie was completely focused and never allowed anything to get in the way of his vision for the future. It was such a free spirit. There aren’t many of these in the world. To accomplish this, you need to be like Freddie, not afraid to offend someone’s apple cart. Some people imagine Freddie as a difficult diva like a flame that demands compromise from people around him. No. In our world, four artists are trying to paint on the same canvas, so Freddie has always been able to find a compromise – a way to get it done. If he finds himself at odds with any of us, he will quickly remove the clouds with generous gestures, wise cracks, or impromptu gifts. I remember one morning, after a particularly tense discussion, he gave me a cassette tape. He woke up most nights and edited my guitar solo collage. “I wanted you to listen to them,” he said. “I made them symphonies because they’re all great!” Creating them with Freddie always gave me the greatest impetus. He was bold and always sensed how to get out of the box. Sometimes he was too far away… and he was usually the first person to notice it. He said with a conspiracy smile, “Ah… I lost it, dear!” But usually there was meaning in his nonsense – art in his madness. It was released. I think he encouraged us all in his way to believe in our own madness and the collective madness of the Group Queen.Freddie was due to turn 65 this year, but despite not being physically here, his presence seems to be stronger than ever. Freddie made the last person behind the furthest stand in the stadium feel connected. he gave
